Ontario’s Nominee Program Moves to an Expression of Interest System

On April 28th, Ontario announced their move to expression of interest (EOI) system for the Foreign Worker and International student streams of the Employer Job Offer Category. Shifting from their previous “first-come, first-served” approach, the EOI system will enable for those who qualify under these streams to submit a profile to be ranked on a points system for the chance to be invited to apply for a nomination from the province.

Ontario’s Job Offer categories had previously opened and closed throughout the year with short notice and operated on a “first-come, first-served” basis, closing after their applicant quota was met. The new EOI system means those that meet the criteria of these streams can submit a profile at any point throughout the year, allowing Ontario to select their most competitive candidates.

Profiles are ranked by factors relating to the job offer, previous work experience in Canada, language proficiency, and education.

What does this mean?

Those with job offers in Ontario had previously had to wait until these streams opened to apply for nomination. Due to the overwhelming number of applications submitted once these streams opened, technical issues often arose prior to the stream quickly closing, and it was not always possible for all who qualify to apply. This new system will facilitate a more predictable process for those who currently have arranged employment in Ontario and meet the requirements for the Employer Job Offer streams.

OINP plans to move their remaining streams to this EOI system soon and will be announcing these changes in the coming weeks.
